From Sheikh School to Statesmanship: The Inspiring Journey of Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud “Silanyo” (AHN)

Sheikh Secondary School has earned its reputation as a cradle for leadership, nurturing bright minds who go on to make an extraordinary difference. Among its most illustrious graduates is Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud, fondly known as Silanyo (May Allah have mercy on him), who became the fourth President of Somaliland (2010–2017).

Early Years & Education at Sheikh

Silanyo’s educational journey began at Pharo Secondary School Sheikh, then known as Sheikh School, a highly selective boarding institution established during British Somaliland. From 1946 to 1960, he attended both Sheikh and Amoud schools—completing his secondary education with distinction.

This foundation paved the way for his scholarship to study abroad—a testament to how strong academic performance here creates life-changing opportunities.

Higher Education and Return Home

Awarded a scholarship to the United Kingdom, Silanyo excelled in his advanced studies: earning a GCE (General Certificate of Education) from the University of London, followed by a Bachelor’s (1960–1963) and Master’s (1963–1965) in Economics from the University of Manchester. Notably, he emerged as one of the first Somalis—and possibly the first—to obtain a Master’s in Economics, marking a significant milestone in academic achievement.

Career and National Service

Upon returning, Silanyo began a lifetime of public service:

  • From 1965 to 1973, he served in Somalia’s Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; then as Minister of Commerce (1973–1978, 1980–1982).
  • He became Chairman of the Somali National Movement (SNM) (1984–1990), leading one of the most consequential liberation efforts against the Barre dictatorship.
  • After Somaliland’s re-independence, he served in the House of Representatives (1993–1996), as Minister of Finance (1997–1999), and as Minister of Planning and Coordination (1999–2000), helping rebuild economic and governance structures.
  • In 2002, he founded and led the Peace, Unity, and Development Party (Kulmiye), eventually winning the presidency in 2010.

Achievements as President of Somaliland (2010–2017)

During his presidency, President Silanyo steered transformative progress:

  • Introduced the Somaliland Shilling as the national currency (2011) in eastern regions, fostering monetary stability.
  • Spearheaded massive infrastructure development: building roads across the countryside—including a 384 km tarmac link between Burao and Erigavo—upgrading airports in Hargeisa and Berbera, and constructing modern ministry offices.
  • Made primary education free, boosting access and equity.
  • Expanded water access through innovative drilling and riverbed damming—especially in Hargeisa, Berbera, Burao, and other major towns.
  • Signed a key joint agreement with DP World to develop Berbera Port—a strategic move to enhance trade, particularly with landlocked Ethiopia.
